Know the Chemistry of Your Cannabis!

Third-party testing with Green Analytics VA, an independent, non-biased testing lab, ensures the integrity and safety of your cannabis plants or products at a fast and affordable rate. A Certificate of Analysis (COA) with a QR code for tracking purposes will be emailed once testing is complete.

Testing is important at multiple times during the production of your plants or products - during growth, harvest or drying of the plant, after processing the extract, and while formulating the consumer product. Testing is generally focused on two areas: potency and purity. Potency includes cannabinoid and terpene profiling. Purity includes pesticide residue screens, mycotoxin screening (toxins excreted by molds), heavy metals testing, microbial contaminants, and residual-solvents testing.

Cannabinoid Potency

Green Analytics VA tests for the 14 cannabinoids listed below using an Agilent 1260 HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography). Our method includes vacuum drying at low temperature to avoid decarboxylation, grinding with a Mill Mixer 400, and solvent extraction.

CBD, CBDA, delta-9 THC, THCA, CBG, CBGA, CBN, CBC, CBCA, CBDV, CBDVA, delta-8 THC, THCV, THCVA

Moisture Content & Water Activity

Moisture content is a measure of the total amount of water in the sample compared to the total weight and is reported as a percent.

Water Activity, aw, is a measure of how much water is available for support microbial growth. Water activity levels below 0.65 will aid in the prevention of microbial growth.

Heavy Metals

Green Analytics VA uses ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) to test for the heavy metals of greatest concern for consumer health.

Arsenic (Ar), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), and Lead (Pb)

Mycotoxins

Green Analytics VA tests for the mycotoxins listed below using an Agilent Ultivo Triple Quad LC/MS.

Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2, and Ochratoxin

Microbial Contamination

Microbial contamination is tested using either culture based methods or DNA based assays with an Agilent AriaMx Real Time qPCR technology. Green Analytics VA tests for Total Aerobic Microbial Count (TAMC), Total Yeast and Mold Count (TYMC), E. Coli, Salmonella, Total Coliforms, Bile tolerant gram-negative bacteria, Pseudomonas, and Staphylococcus.

Residual Solvents

The list of residual solvents we test for is based on common extraction and concentration techniques in the industry. We use an Agilent GC/MS, gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry, to detect low levels of residual solvents.

Terpene Profile

Terpenes give the cannabis plant it’s unique aroma and flavor. We use an Agilent GC/MS, gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry, to profile the terpenes in your plant or product.

How do I order testing and get my sample to you?

There are a few options for getting your samples tested with Green Analytics VA.

Testing can be ordered online once you are set-up in our LIMS system. To get set-up, fill out the New Customer Inquiry Form on the Forms page of this website requesting to be set up with our Online Ordering System. You will get a login email within 24 hours, and testing can be ordered immediately once you are there. Samples can be mailed in or dropped off at the lab.

Testing can also be ordered by filling out a Chain of Custody Form and emailing to info_va@greenanalyticsllc.com or bringing it in with your sample. Samples can be dropped off or mailed in (hemp only)to the lab accompanied by the Chain of Custody.

There are more guidelines for how to package and label samples under the Submitting a Sample section of the website.

What is a Representative Sample?

The term sample is defined as a part of anything presented and tested as evidence of the quality of the whole. A representative sample needs to be stable, homogeneous, and representative of the batch from which it is taken. Due to the non-homogenous nature of the hemp plant itself and the variation in the field from one plant or section to another, it is challenging to obtain a truly representative sample. The USDA and individual states’ agriculture departments with hemp programs have protocols for how they will take representative samples from the field for regulatory purposes.

When testing to sell biomass or smokable hemp, it is recommended that the sample you send in represents what you will be selling. Production batches are fairly homogeneous in nature, therefore a representative sample of an extract, oil, or topical, is typically easier to take. Please ensure the material is well mixed before taking the sample. Edibles can also be challenging to take a representative sample, be sure to send in several units or pieces from different portions of the batch that we will homogenize to get a sample representative of the entire batch.

What is your  turnaround time?

We have a typical turnaround of 2-3 days for potency. All other tests and packages take 5-7 business days. There are faster turnaround options available for an additional cost.

What is the cost for testing?

The cost for individual tests and packages can be found on our Chain of Custody Form.

For expedited results in 3-4 business days a 50% upcharge will be applied. This will be applied to all tests EXCEPT cannabinoid potency. Those are always a 2-3 turnaround.

How do I pay?

Green Analytics VA accepts checks, cash or credit cards. Checks must be included with the sample and Chain of Custody. To pay by credit card an invoice will be sent with a link to enter your credit card information; usually invoices are generated every two weeks.
